Story of the Island of Spices
.
It's not easy to trace exactly how long people have known of cinnamon, However as per the Christian Bible, Moses used it as part of anointing oil, some experts are of the view that Egyptians also used the Cinnamon for among other tasks specially for embalming. Many ancient texts says that the Emperor Nero added a large amount of cinnamon to the funeral pyre for his wife, Poppaea Sabina, in 65 AD, in order to mask the scent of her body burning.
At some stage in the middle Ages, only very wealthy people could manage to obtain spices from the East. Hence the Europeans began to regard cinnamon as a kind of status symbol, Cinnamon, along with spices like Pepper, clove, Mace & nutmeg, eventually played a key role in Europe's expansion into Asia, as well. By the 17th century, cinnamon had become the most profitable spice in the Dutch East India Company trade.
